The remains were found on Friday, May 15, 2026, during the execution of a search warrant at the family residence located at 355 Offutt Drive in the Big Chimney area of Kanawha County, West Virginia. Shayln had lived at the home with her mother and stepfather.
An autopsy performed on Monday, May 18, 2026, by the West Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the remains as Shayln Shantel Harvey, and her death has been ruled a homicide.
Shayln was last seen on May 2, 2026, in the Big Chimney area. Her stepfather, 52-year-old James Warren Truman, reported her missing on May 4. Authorities had previously responded to the Offutt Drive residence when she was first reported missing. The case quickly evolved as investigators focused on the home and surrounding property.
On May 7 or May 8, 2026, Truman was arrested following an interview with police during which he allegedly admitted to child sex crimes that mostly occurred in April at the home.
