Her story is one of resilience, devotion, and love that touched generations.
Sarah Jane, the fifth of John and Isabella Martin’s nine children, was born in Bannockburn, Scotland. Her upbringing in a huge family gave her the strength, compassion, and togetherness that would characterize her life. She immigrated to the United States in 1947, starting a trip that would change her life.
Jane became a citizen of the United States while residing in Detroit, Michigan. She embraced her new country while retaining the customs and spirit of Scotland. She married Walter Salmon in 1951 after meeting the love of her life in Detroit. They relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, together, and established a life based on community, family, and faith. Their two children were reared with love and support in their house, which turned into a warm and inviting environment.
She had an unshakeable commitment to her family. Her son Stephen Salmon and his wife Jackie, as well as her daughter Lesley Salmon, survive her. Ganson and Brogan Salmon, her grandchildren, carry on her tradition of love and tenacity. Jane’s vast, loving, and globally linked family is demonstrated by the numerous nieces and nephews she leaves behind in the UK and Canada.
Her life was a bridge between cultures and continents, and she remained deeply connected to her Scottish roots while embracing the opportunities of her American journey. Friends and family recall her as a woman of grace, humor, and wisdom, whose presence brought comfort and joy.
The Allisonville Christian Church, situated at 7701 Allisonville Rd. in Indianapolis, will host a celebration to remember her extraordinary life on Friday, February 13 at 3:00 p.m. This event will be an opportunity to commemorate a lady whose narrative started in Scotland and found a home in the hearts of Indianapolis residents, as well as to exchange memories and consider her incredible journey.
