The community of Kearney, Nebraska, grieves the loss of Charles Edward Mefferd, who died on January 4, 2026, following a protracted engagement with Parkinson’s disease at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home. Widely known as Charlie, he was born in New York City on March 9, 1938, to parents Ralph Leroy Mefferd Sr. and Dorothy Idora Mefferd (née Dodds).
His early life involved a geographical transition when his father’s employment with the American Museum of Natural History precipitated the family’s relocation from Roslyn, New York, to Ainsworth, Nebraska.
There, he distinguished himself scholastically, achieving salutatorian status upon his 1956 graduation from Ainsworth High School while also participating in football and baseball. In 1957, he committed to service as a member of the United States Marine Corps, an affiliation that informed a lasting sense of honor.
Also in 1957, he entered matrimony with Leona Emry. Their partnership included nurturing four children—Kathleen, Brett, Chad, and Shawna—as he pursued a vocational trajectory within telecommunications. Commencing as a field technician, he attained managerial responsibilities, necessitating family relocations across multiple western Nebraska municipalities and a temporary residence in Houston, Texas.
A subsequent professional chapter was with the firm MCI. In 1986, he and Janice (Brown) McGinley wed in Valentine, Nebraska, thereby integrating their families; he embraced the roles of stepfather to Robert, Cyndi, Rodney, and Myndi.
A musical undercurrent animated his experience. He performed as a guitarist in various country ensembles, enlivening gatherings with rhythm and melody, and instilling this artistic appreciation in his offspring. Athletic pursuits provided commensurate fulfillment; he mentored youth teams, participated in softball for many years, enjoyed golf in partnership with Janice, and maintained unwavering support for the University of Nebraska athletics program.
His life encompassed seasons of bereavement, having been preceded in death by his wife Janice; his brother, Ralph Mefferd Jr.; his mother, Dorothy; his stepfather, Frank Kaiser; and his father, Ralph Sr. He is survived by his children, Kathleen Emry Mefferd, Brett Mefferd, Chad Mefferd (spouse Elaine), and Shawna Mefferd Kelty; his stepchildren, Cyndi McNaught (spouse Tom), Robert McGinley (spouse Denise), Rodney McGinley (spouse Jolene Keck McGinley), and Myndi McGinley Gunnink (spouse Jay); and a considerable lineage of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will perpetuate his narrative.
