With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Neil Roger O’Brien, age 83, of Kronenwetter, Wisconsin, who died peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. Born on May 30, 1942, in Bessemer, Michigan, to Raymond and Lillian (Gartman) O’Brien, Neil grew up in the Upper Peninsula before making his home in the Wausau area, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and quiet service.
On January 15, 1965, he married Colleen Ann Pierce in Wausau, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than six decades. Neil was a proud veteran who served his country honorably and carried the values of duty, loyalty, and integrity into every aspect of his life. His sudden yet peaceful departure has left family, friends, and the Wausau-Kronenwetter community reflecting on a man whose steady presence and gentle kindness touched many lives.
Neil Roger O’Brien was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose love for his family was evident in every day he lived. He and Colleen created a warm, welcoming home where laughter, support, and shared traditions were always present. Neil took immense pride in his role as husband and provider, offering steady encouragement and quiet strength to his wife, children, and grandchildren through life’s joys and challenges.
Family gatherings were filled with his stories, his humor, and his genuine interest in everyone’s well-being. He remained close to his siblings and extended relatives, maintaining bonds that reflected his deep appreciation for family ties. For many years, Neil worked as Night Maintenance Supervisor at the Wausau YMCA, a role that suited his strong work ethic, reliability, and desire to contribute to the community. He took pride in keeping the facility clean, safe, and welcoming for members who used it during evening hours, often going beyond his duties to ensure everything ran smoothly.
Colleagues and YMCA members appreciated his dependability, his friendly demeanor, and the way he made the building feel like a second home for those who came through its doors. Neil’s long service reflected a man who valued honest labor and the satisfaction of a job well done, earning quiet respect from coworkers and the many people who benefited from his efforts.
A proud veteran, Neil carried the lessons of service and responsibility from his military days into civilian life. He remained connected to fellow veterans and supported community efforts that honored military service. His patriotism and sense of duty were evident in the way he lived—always willing to help, always ready to lend a hand, always showing up when needed.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Wausau Elks Lodge, 414 Scott Street, Wausau, Wisconsin. Military Honors will be provided at 12:30 p.m. by the Darling-Gunderson Post #341 American Legion, Birnamwood, followed by a luncheon.
