Mary entered the world on October 24, 1938, born to Raymond Pearce and Helen Kane in Springfield. The familiar streets of the capital city shaped her formative years, cultivating a spirit of loyalty and quiet perseverance. For decades, Springfield recognized her as a figure of constancy, whose presence radiated warmth and steadiness across generations.
Her academic foundation was laid at Lanphier High School, after which she embarked on a career with Illinois Bell. Over thirty-two years of service, culminating in her retirement in 1991, she became a vital contributor to telecommunications in central Illinois. Her work ensured reliable communication for households and businesses, embodying steadfastness during a period of rapid technological change.
On August 17, 1963, she united in marriage with William Dougherty Jr., beginning a partnership that endured for more than six decades. Together they cultivated a household grounded in shared principles and mutual care. Mary embraced motherhood with joy, raising her daughter Chris Hand of Springfield, and later celebrating the lives of her grandchildren, Michael Guinan of Chatham and Amanda Hand of San Francisco. Her affection also extended to her sister, Linda Williams of Springfield, reinforcing familial bonds that offered strength and comfort within Sangamon County.

Mary’s survivors include her husband William, daughter Chris, grandchildren Michael and Amanda, and sister Linda. To honor her life, a funeral service is scheduled for December 26, 2025, at noon at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, preceded by visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.
