We regret to inform you of the demise of Marcus “Mark” M. Olson, 98, of Peoria, Illinois. He passed away quietly on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Buehler Home, surrounded by his devoted family. Numerous people were impacted by his incredible journey, which left a legacy of community, commitment, and love for the sports he was passionate about.
Frank and Ida (Anttila) Olson were the parents of Mark, who was born in Marquette, Michigan, on October 9, 1927. On September 16, 1947, he wed the love of his life, M. Elaine Stolpe. They were married for over fifty years until Elaine passed away in 1996. Love, laughter, and the delight of raising a family characterized their partnership.
Mark made incredible contributions to child athletics. He was a trailblazer in the field of youth hockey, helping to start programs in Escanaba, Michigan, and subsequently Central Illinois. Together with Pete BardezBanian, he co-founded the Peoria Blades, giving future generations of players the chance to develop, play, and learn.
He was recognized as a former president and lifelong member of the Independent Sports Club of Peoria due to his commitment to both the sport and his community. In keeping with his passion for sports and community service, he also had lifetime memberships in the Rivermen Booster Club and the Old Timers Baseball Association.
Mark’s life revolved on his family. His daughters are Susan I. Brady of Edwards, Jane A. (Mark) Golowski of Peoria, and Patti L. (Bob) Keegan of Germantown Hills; his son is Michael P. (Laurie) Olson of Peoria. His 15 grandkids, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren carry on his tradition, and three more are anticipated in 2026. In addition, Helen Olson, his sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews will remember him with love and respect.
Mark’s parents, wife Elaine, sons Richard M. “Ric” and Joseph A. Olson, two young grandchildren Derek and Lindsay Olson, his son-in-law Gerald “Jerry” Brady, Jr., his sisters Ruth and Virginia, and eight brothers—Wesley, Allan, Paul, Gordon, Edward, Roy, Ted, and Weldon—all passed away before him. Despite the numerous losses his family has experienced, Mark’s memory will always be a source of support and consolation.
On Sunday, January 11, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, there will be a visitation at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Peoria Heights, Illinois. On Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:30 AM, there will be a funeral mass in the church. An hour before, there will be another visitation. The entombment will occur at the Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria, with Fr. Daniel Dionesotes serving as the officiant. Everyone who had the good fortune to meet Mark will continue to be inspired by his life, which was characterized by love, service, and community.
