The community of Bremen, Indiana, is grieving the loss of Loretta June Huff-Smith, who died peacefully on January 7, 2026, at ninety-four years of age. Her passing, occurring in the presence of her family, concluded a life deeply rooted in religious conviction, dedication, and communal engagement.
Born Loretta Hochstetler on June 25, 1931, to Stephen and Edna Hochstetler (née Ewald), her formative years were guided by Christian principles and familial bonds that informed her lifelong choices. She married James B. Huff on June 26, 1949, sharing sixty-three years together until his death on January 23, 2012. She later entered into marriage with John Smith on January 1, 2020, who survives her and provided companionship in her later life.
A committed Christian, her faith manifested in tangible community action. For three decades, she and her first husband organized the Bremen Holy Walk, an annual nativity reenactment hosted on their property. This event drew regional visitors, offering spiritual reflection and fostering local unity through a tradition that embodied her commitment to hospitality and shared belief.
Her family was the joyful core of her existence. She is survived by her husband, John Smith; her three children: Carlene Leeper (spouse Tony), Max Huff (spouse Linda), and Rex Huff (spouse Kerry); eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The enduring affection within this multigenerational network provided continual warmth and purpose to her days.
While her occupational life was closely linked to supporting the family’s Huff’s Hill Dairy Farm, her fundamental vocation was expressed through her roles as spouse, parent, and grandparent, offering constant affection and support. Her home served as a sanctuary where gatherings reaffirmed the significance of faith and kinship. Within Bremen, her presence represented the resilience derived from devotion and unassuming generosity.
Visitation is planned on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Bremen United Methodist Church. Pastors Max Milton and Chuck Krieg will lead the burial ceremony at noon, and the deceased will be buried in Bremen Cemetery. The many lives she improved will continue to find comfort and direction in her memory.
