The Wayland community and the WACO Community School District are in a state of profound grief following the death of 17-year-old Kyler Rugg, a high school senior who succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic single-vehicle rollover accident on Friday, February 13, 2026.
Kyler’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, classmates, and educators heartbroken, prompting an outpouring of support and a coordinated response from the school district to help students and staff cope with the devastating loss. The accident occurred in southeastern Iowa and claimed the life of a young man remembered as a beloved member of his small community.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash took place at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Franklin Avenue, located south of the small town of Trenton in Henry County. Kyler was the sole occupant and driver of a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder traveling southbound on Franklin Avenue when he failed to navigate a curve in the roadway, causing him to lose control of the SUV. The vehicle subsequently rolled multiple times, and Kyler, who authorities confirmed was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Pathfinder during the violent sequence of rolls.
Emergency responders, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Henry County Ambulance, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, and Medforce, arrived quickly at the scene and provided immediate medical care. Due to the severity of his injuries, Kyler was airlifted by medical helicopter to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for advanced trauma treatment. Despite the dedicated and urgent efforts of medical personnel, Kyler tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The news of the tragedy was shared with the community Friday evening by WACO Community School District Superintendent Spencer Lueders, with the permission of Kyler’s family. In a heartfelt message, Superintendent Lueders expressed the collective sorrow, stating, “This loss is heartbreaking, and our thoughts and prayers are with Kyler’s family, friends, classmates, and all those who are grieving. Moments like this remind us that our school district is more than classrooms and schedules—we are a community, and we care deeply for one another.”
In an effort to support students and staff during this difficult time, the WACO Community School District announced that additional counseling support services would be made available across the entire district on Monday, February 16. Counselors and support personnel will be present to assist anyone who may need time, space, or someone to talk with as they process the grief of losing a fellow student and friend. Superintendent Lueders emphasized the community’s commitment to wrapping their arms around Kyler’s family and one another.
The loss of Kyler Rugg, a senior with his entire future ahead of him, has left a void in the WACO community that will be deeply felt. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the accident, and the community now faces the difficult task of mourning a young life cut far too short, while holding his family close in their thoughts and honoring his memory.
