A 75-year-old certified public accountant who built a career at Arthur Andersen, Ford Motor Company, and Integrated Health Associates has died from cancer-related complications. Jennifer Downing Edwards passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, surrounded by family.
She split her adult life between Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she worked and volunteered for decades, and Cary, North Carolina, where she moved after her diagnosis to be closer to her daughter.
Edwards began her professional path at Arthur Andersen, a firm once known for its rigorous standards and analytical culture. She later moved to Integrated Health Associates as an accountant and also served as an internal auditor at Ford Motor Company. Colleagues from those years describe her as someone who caught errors others missed and who explained financial concepts without condescension.
She earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University. Her academic performance earned her induction into Phi Beta Kappa, an honor reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual achievement. Fellow students recall that she studied late into the night but still found time to help others understand difficult material.
In retirement, Edwards shifted her energy to volunteer service. She became a docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, where she led tours and shared her knowledge of paintings and sculptures with visitors. She also served as treasurer of the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop, a role that used her accounting skills to benefit a charitable organization.
Additionally, she worked as an usher at Hill Auditorium, greeting concertgoers and helping them find their seats. Fellow volunteers say she treated every task, whether handling money or tearing tickets, with the same quiet professionalism.
Edwards was diagnosed with cancer in 2024. She moved to Cary, North Carolina, to live near her daughter Kathryn, whom she frequently called her greatest accomplishment. Family members say she faced treatment with courage and rarely complained about pain. She focused instead on time with loved ones, reading, and listening to music. Her condition worsened gradually, and she died on May 8, 2026.
She is survived by her daughter Kathryn and a network of former coworkers and fellow volunteers. No memorial service details have been announced. The family has requested privacy. Those wishing to honor her memory may consider donating to the University of Michigan Museum of Art or a local thrift shop in her name. Edwards lived a life that balanced spreadsheets with sonnets, audits with art tours, and corporate boardrooms with quiet acts of service. That balance was her gift.
