It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jeanette (Jan) Bresnahan, 87, of Wausau, Wisconsin, who died peacefully at her home on February 8, 2026, under the compassionate care of Compassus Hospice Service and surrounded by her loving family.
Born in 1938, Jan spent her whole life in the Wausau area, where she was renowned and adored for her quiet fortitude, steadfast faith, and commitment to her family. She lived with dignity and strength, especially in the years following the death of her husband, Pat Bresnahan, on February 9, 2018, one day after their 60th wedding anniversary.
On February 8, 1958, Jan married Pat Bresnahan at St. Mary’s Church in Wausau, beginning a 60-year partnership rooted in mutual respect, shared faith, and unwavering commitment. Their wedding marked the start of a life together that included raising a family, building a home, and facing life’s joys and challenges side by side.
After Pat’s passing in 2018, Jan remained a pillar of strength for her children and grandchildren, channeling her grief into purposeful activity and continued devotion to those she loved. She demonstrated remarkable independence and fortitude, filling her days with meaningful tasks, family time, and church involvement. Her ability to carry forward with dignity and hope after such a profound loss inspired everyone who knew her.
Jan was deeply dedicated to her family and her faith community at Zion Lutheran Church, where she remained active and connected throughout her life. Early in her career, she worked as a waitress at Palm’s Supper Club and Lo-Mar’s (now BB Jacks), roles that showcased her warmth, efficiency, and ability to make customers feel welcomed.
She later directed her energies into church, family, and home activities, where she found satisfaction in helping her loved ones and making a difference in her congregation’s lives. Jan was a lady who valued being active and giving of herself, and her days were frequently filled with little but significant duties, such as helping relatives, going to church, or maintaining friendships. Her gentle example of perseverance had a lasting effect, and her presence gave people around her security and comfort.
Reverend Steven Gjerde will preside over a memorial ceremony on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, located at 709 N 6th Street, Wausau. Family, friends, former neighbors, and members of the Wausau community will have the chance to come together, share memories, and express gratitude for Jan’s life during the visitation period, which will run from 10:00 a.m. until the church service time.
Devotion to her spouse, her family, her religion, and the principles that governed her daily existence characterized Jan Bresnahan’s life. She shown incredible bravery after losing Pat by carrying on with her life, staying active, staying in touch, and being there for others in need. Her legacy lives on in the love she shared, the tenacity she shown, and the small ways she improved the world.
