A bright and beloved 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in his Michigan City home in a tragic incident that has intensified concerns over a recent surge in teen violence.
Devin Porter, a freshman at Michigan City High School and an honor roll student who loved playing basketball, was remembered as a kind-hearted young man with a promising future. He was just nine days away from turning 15 and had been excitedly planning his birthday celebration.
On the afternoon of Friday, May 15, 2026, Devin asked his mother for permission to go to the local YMCA to play basketball, a routine activity for him. She agreed, hoping he would enjoy some physical activity and socialization. That conversation would be the last time she spoke with her son. Later that day, gunfire erupted near their home in the 300 block of West 11th Street.
Devin suddenly ran into his older sister’s bedroom and collapsed. His sister initially struggled to process the loud sounds as gunshots. She and family members tried to help him as he gasped for air, with blood on her hands. By the time paramedics arrived, his condition had deteriorated rapidly. Officers provided life-saving measures at the scene before LaPorte County EMS transported him to Franciscan Health Hospital in Michigan City.
Devin Porter was pronounced dead at the hospital from his gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred around 4:30 p.m. in a residential area near Wabash Street. His death marks the second fatal shooting of a teenager in Michigan City within a week, part of a troubling wave in which five teens were shot in less than seven days.
