A Memorial Day celebration in Fulton County, Georgia, turned tragic on May 25, 2026, when a high-speed police chase culminated in the death of 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson.
The incident occurred in a gas station parking lot after a fleeing vehicle lost control, also leaving three others with serious injuries, including the suspect, his passenger, and an unrelated motorist.
The sequence of events began around 2:40 p.m. when a Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to pull over a Hyundai Elantra for speeding on Interstate 20 West. The vehicle, driven by 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, was recorded traveling at approximately 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Although White initially appeared to comply by slowing down, he suddenly accelerated, weaving dangerously through traffic.
White exited onto the Boulevard ramp before merging back onto the interstate, narrowly avoiding another collision. The initial pursuing trooper disengaged due to safety concerns, but a second trooper spotted the erratic driving and attempted to intervene. Before contact could be made, White exited at high speed onto the Hill Street ramp, lost control of the vehicle, crossed the street, and crashed into a gas station lot.
Inside the lot, White’s car struck a parked vehicle. Patterson, who was standing next to the car, sustained fatal injuries. White, his passenger, and the driver of the parked car were all transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities have charged White with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, and additional offenses. The Georgia Department of Public Safety stated that the investigation is ongoing and highlighted the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with evading law enforcement.
The department also reported that the Memorial Day weekend saw 153 crash-related injuries and four fatalities across the state, emphasizing the heightened risks of reckless driving during busy holiday periods. Officials offered condolences to Patterson’s family, acknowledging the profound grief experienced by loved ones, witnesses, and the community.
