It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Carrie Heilman. The highly respected associate professor at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce and longtime Faculty Athletics Representative died on February 26, 2026 at the age of 40 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her passing has left the entire UVA community in mourning, grieving the loss of an exceptional educator, mentor, and advocate for student-athletes whose warmth and dedication touched so many lives.
Carrie was a standout faculty member who taught brand management, marketing, and communications courses with passion and skill. She served as adviser to the McIntire National Student Advertising Competition team, guiding them to multiple national titles, and was honored with the UVA All-University Teaching Award in 2020 for her outstanding contributions to student success.
For many years she served as UVA’s Faculty Athletics Representative, playing a key role in supporting the academic and personal development of student-athletes. She was also the proud mother of two UVA swimmers, Olympian Thomas Heilman and his brother Matthew, and found her greatest joy in her family alongside her husband Brad.
Those fortunate enough to know her describe Carrie as a person of remarkable humility, kindness, intelligence, and warmth. She had a special gift for inspiring those around her and making a positive difference through both her professional work and personal relationships.
The news of her death has prompted heartfelt tributes from colleagues, students, and the athletics department, all acknowledging the deep and lasting impact she had at the University of Virginia. Her dedication and compassionate spirit will be remembered by the many lives she touched.
As the University of Virginia and the broader community reflect on her life, Carrie Heilman leaves behind a powerful legacy of excellence and care.
