It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Anthony “Tony” Finlay on January 5, 2026, at his home in Willingham, England. Affectionately known as “Tog” to friends and formerly addressed as Sergeant Anthony Finlay during his distinguished military tenure, he was 67 years of age.
While his departure was sudden, there is solace in the knowledge that his final hours were spent in the comforting presence of family. Tony navigated life with a profound and consistent gentleness, consistently extending support to others even amidst personal trials.
He fulfilled a dedicated period of service with the 9th/12th Royal Lancers from 1974 until 1993, attaining the rank of sergeant. The values and experiences of military life left an indelible imprint on his character. The structured resolve and deep-seated fellowship of those years remained integral to his identity long after his formal service concluded.
Comrades from his regiment recall him with great affection, observing that he has now reported to his “final muster point”—a phrase imbued with the shared understanding of those who have served. Tony maintained a steadfast connection to the veteran community, personifying the mutual solidarity and fortitude that defines it.
In his later life, he confronted several health difficulties, yet he met each with resolute courage. His focus remained steadfastly on the well-being of those in his orbit, consistently providing a foundation of hope and resilience to others. This selfless nature profoundly impacted his local community in Willingham, where he established a nurturing household and forged enduring bonds of friendship.
Family was the unwavering cornerstone of Tony’s world. He was a beloved and devoted husband to Mary, with whom he shared a lifetime of affection and shared purpose. As a father to Niamh and Joe, he infused their lives with steadfast pride and thoughtful counsel. His role as a grandfather provided him with particular delight, his gentle nature creating a cherished space for his expanding circle of grandchildren. He lived by a philosophy of genuine engagement, prioritizing meaningful relationships and unwavering loyalty.
His dedication to communal welfare was expressed quietly yet significantly. His enduring influence is linked to his support of organizations aiding the most vulnerable—from children through charities such as Barnardo’s, to individuals confronting serious illness via the Arthur Rank Hospice. This philanthropic spirit mirrors the essence of the man: one who consistently sought to contribute, even during periods of personal adversity.
A service to commemorate his life will be held at Huntingdon Crematorium on Thursday, February 12, 2026, commencing at twelve o’clock noon. This gathering will provide an opportunity to recount memories, honor his fundamentally authentic character, and reflect upon the encouragement he provided to countless lives.
