A family land dispute on Monterey Road in Rankin County, near Florence, Mississippi, left three people dead on Friday, May 8, 2026. Deputies from the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting report just before 4 p.m. in the 1400 block. When officers arrived, they found two victims deceased on the property. A third person was later found dead inside a residence after a multi-hour standoff.
The deceased were identified as Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62; his wife Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43; and Walter’s brother Kurt Tyler Birdsong, 56. Investigators believe Kurt Birdsong shot his brother and sister-in-law during an escalating argument over land. Both Walter and Amanda Birdsong were pronounced dead at the scene. Kurt Birdsong then retreated into a home on the same property and refused to come out.
Law enforcement established a perimeter around the residence. Neighbors in nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. The Rankin County SWAT team, negotiators, and specialized response units were called to the scene. Because the family operated a firearms-related business on the property, federal agencies were also contacted. The FBI, ATF, Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, and the Clinton Bomb Squad assisted local deputies.
Negotiators made repeated attempts to contact Kurt Birdsong inside the home. After those efforts failed, deputies used armored vehicles and technical equipment to force entry. Inside, they found Kurt Birdsong deceased in a bathroom. The Rankin County Deputy Coroner determined that he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The family operates W.E. Birdsong & Associates Inc., a firearms coating and customization business established in 1973. The business holds a federal firearms license and is located at a nearby address on Monterey Road. The presence of firearms and related materials on the property required additional safety precautions during the standoff.
Neighbors described the area as typically quiet and expressed shock that a family disagreement escalated into deadly violence. The Birdsong family had been longtime residents and business operators in the community. Extended relatives are now mourning the loss of three family members in a single incident that also removed the owner of a local business.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey extended appreciation to all responding agencies and asked the community to pray for the affected family. No active threat to the public remains.
