A devastating freak accident in the heart of Midtown Manhattan claimed the life of a 56-year-old Westchester County woman when she stepped directly into an uncovered utility manhole moments after parking her vehicle.
Donike Gocaj, a resident of Briarcliff Manor known to family as a loving mother to a son and daughter and a devoted grandmother to two grandchildren, died from injuries sustained in the fall late Monday night. The incident has raised questions about utility safety in one of New York City’s busiest and most upscale shopping districts.
The fatal fall occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the intersection of East 52nd Street and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Gocaj had parked her Mercedes-Benz SUV outside Cartier’s flagship store at 653 Fifth Avenue when she alighted from the vehicle and stepped into the open Con Edison utility manhole. She plunged approximately 10 feet into the hole, landing inside the underground shaft.
First responders arrived quickly at the scene and found Donike Gocaj unconscious and unresponsive inside the open manhole. Emergency personnel worked to extract her from the roughly 10-foot-deep shaft before rushing her to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead from her injuries sustained in the fall.
Gocaj, who lived in a $1.1 million home in Briarcliff Manor, Westchester County, was described by family as a caring and loving person dedicated to her children and grandchildren.
