On Tuesday night, May 5, 2026, a motorcycle crash in Wilkes County claimed the life of 22‑year‑old Winston Jahleel Poe of North Wilkesboro. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred at approximately 9:57 p.m. along Mountain Valley Church Road near Cora Caudill Road, a rural stretch known for sharp curves.

Troopers said Poe was riding a 2025 Kawasaki Ninja 500 westbound when the motorcycle ran off the right side of the road while approaching a curve. The bike struck a guardrail and overturned, ejecting Poe over the barrier.

Emergency medical crews responded quickly and transported Poe to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Wilkes Medical Center. Despite efforts by medical staff, he later died from his injuries.

Investigators noted that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The motorcycle sustained heavy damage after striking the guardrail, and troopers documented the scene to determine contributing factors such as speed or roadway conditions.

The fatal crash has deeply affected the North Wilkesboro community, where Poe was remembered as a young man with strong local ties. Friends and family expressed shock at the sudden loss, gathering to support one another in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Officials have urged drivers and riders to exercise caution on rural roads, particularly in areas with sharp curves and limited visibility, as they work to finalize the report on Poe’s fatal crash.
