It is with profound sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Daniel Edward Barrow Jr., known affectionately as Dan, on January 8, 2026. His departure at the age of eighty-one has generated profound distress among his kin, associates, and the broader community.
Mr. Barrow’s existence, spanning eight decades, was characterized by an inquiring intellect, principled conduct, benevolent disposition, and a venturesome ethos that created a lasting impression upon both personal relations and the technological sector. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he possessed a resolute but unassuming determination that directed his trajectory from youth toward a lifetime of consequential accomplishment and substantive engagement.
He completed undergraduate studies at Indiana University, subsequently commencing his professional vocation at IBM. This institutional experience proved instructive, yet it ultimately proved incongruent with the scope of his aspirations. Demonstrating characteristic initiative, he established DPS, Inc., in 1972, operating initially from a grocery store basement with a sole staff member.
Through successive decades, he cultivated this venture into an esteemed technological enterprise based in Carmel, Indiana, providing services to an international clientele. Personnel esteemed him for his acumen, consistent guidance, compassionate demeanor, and foresight. His canine companion, Otis, became integrated into the organizational ethos, with the informal “Otis Award” conferred upon staff for work exemplifying purpose, humanity, and collegiality.
Foremost, he was committed to his familial role, dispensing affection and encouragement liberally. Numerous nephews and nieces attribute their own professional orientations in technology or enterprise to his inspirational model of actualizing concepts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Barrow and Daniel Edward Barrow Sr., and his sister, Marilyn (Barrow) Smith.
He is survived by his sister, Carol (Barrow) Beesley, and an extensive network of relatives, including nephews and nieces: Chris Beesley (spouse Jenni) and their children Alex and Anna; Patrick Beesley (spouse Michelle) and their son Max; Erin Kozlowski (spouse Tom) and their daughters Kate and Emily; Elizabeth Paolini (spouse Tom) and their children Edward and Julian; and Ryan Smith (spouse Laura) and their children Georgia and William.
His subtle, laconic humor provided levity to social interactions, exemplified by rejoinders to sartorial praise such as, “The garment is subordinate to the man,” or his recreational adoption of casual footwear. He also maintained a firm commitment to philanthropic engagement, regularly contributing to institutions such as the Indianapolis Zoo and The Salvation Army, which he viewed as essential to communal welfare and cultural preservation.
A ceremony commemorating his life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on January 18, 2026, at the Day & Deremiah Frye Funeral Home (4150 East 3rd Street, Bloomington, Indiana), followed by a collation. The family suggests donations to the Indianapolis Zoo or The Salvation Army in his name, rather than floral tributes, honoring the endeavors he valued.
